Dzumbe, meaning homestead in the local language Kidigo, has two double and two twin rooms, all ensuite, with both internal and external access and an ensuite double annex with its own entrance, sleeping 10 people in all.  Designed in the Swahili style, with a high central hallway, the huge doorways draw in the sea breeze which circulates around the house providing natural air-conditioning.  Stylishly decorated with eclectic antiques and original art works from famous Kenyan artists this is a perfect house for a family reunion or a group of friends.

Four° Twenty’ South offers an authentic escape to a place where time is measured by the tides. Dzumbe House is rented on a self-catering basis.

The house comes staffed with personal chef and housekeeper who will work around you, taking care of cooking, cleaning and laundry and are even happy to shop for you, although with seafood straight from the ocean and seasonal fruit and vegetables sold door to door by local traders, you may not find that such a chore. If you would rather a catered option, they can offer a menu using the freshest seasonal produce tailored to your preferences.

The house has an uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean with a private plunge pool right off the verandah looking onto the spectacular Diani beach. The turquoise lagoon is a vast natural spa and its warm, clear water is heavenly for swimming whether the tide is in or out. The dazzling sand is so fine and so white that you can walk on it barefoot at any time of day.

Amid the three acres of tropical gardens, there is a wealth of bird life and an assortment of monkeys which play in the grounds and sometimes on your roof. You may hear bushbabies at night.

 

The house has been simply furnished with a stylish mix of British and Swahili furniture, some antique and most locally sourced. Art works are original. The houses are fully equipped down to beach towels. There are overhead and standing fans and a sea breeze to cool you. Large mosquito nets cover all the beds.

It provides a uniquely authentic, old fashioned seaside holiday, far removed from that of a resort, in harmony with the natural local environment, the seasons and the tides.
